Mastic
From OAPedia.com
Mastic is a town on Long Island which is a haven for white trash and sex offenders.
Randy Spears
In February, 2008, Randy Spears, a co-host on BLI in the Morning on radio station WBLI, was suspended for making jokes about Mastic residents, implying they lived in trailer parks. Opie and Anthony defended the DJ (despite his having done a hack radio bit where he was in a wading pool filled with oatmeal), and went off on station manager John Shea for not defending his employee, and William Floyd School District Board President Bob Vecchio, for calling for the DJ's firing. After reading the story on the air, a bunch of listeners called in to tell O&A how shitty Mastic is. On February 29, O&A (with Patrice Oneal in studio) got Vecchio on the air and confronted him about his comments; despite O&A pestering him, he defended his position and took their jokes well. O&A came away almost liking the guy.
On March 3, Randy apologized for his comments at a news conference in Mastic. Mark Smothergill, president of the Chamber of Commerce of The Mastics and Shirley, asked "What happened today other than that his job is secure?" O&A discussed the story the following day and took Smothergill's comments to mean that he wanted Spears fired, so they verbally trashed him. Eventually they got him on the phone and found out he was actually an O&A fan (he brought up some O&A references during the call, such as Anthony being a tin knocker). Smothergill explained that he was mad that Randy was disingenuous about his apology, and apparently wasn't advocating his firing.
Because of the controversy over Randy's comments, O&A chose to dedicate the rest of the week to stories and facts about Mastic, called "Get to Know Mastic". They even found some real estate listings where the houses were apparently selling for less than $2000! Since then, O&A will occasionally do a "Mastic moment" when a new story about it comes up.
Tom the hot dog vendor
Mastic is also the home of the hot dog vendor Tom, who tried to get a WOW sticker stop going at his hot dog stand. O&A and Jimmy then goofed on his miserable existence, joking that he served hot dog cereal to his kids and gave them hot dogs as presents (June 18, 2007).[1]
