John Mainelli was a writer for the New York Post who Howard Stern helped get fired from his job after Mainelli wrote an article about Howard possibly returning to terrestrial radio after his move to Sirius. Howard exposed the fact that Mainelli was also a radio consultant and thought his article about him was a conflict of interest. When the fact came out, Mainelli had to choose between the two jobs, and chose to leave the Post.

Eventually, Mainelli was hired as Program Director for WFNY-FM (Opie and Anthony's terrestrial flagship station) but was let go when the station switched from a talk format back to a rock format. Mainelli was replaced by Tracy Cloherty.

After being let go, Mainelli critiqued O&A in an email message. O&A got Mainelli on the phone and confronted him about it on the air.
