Dave Rabbit
From OAPedia.com
Dave Rabbit was a soldier who broadcast an underground radio show, Radio First Termer, from a whorehouse in Vietnam for 21 days in 1971. He would play "hard acid rock" like Steppenwolf, and his show contained many jokes and references to the Vietnam War, including reading sayings on the latrine walls (such as "While I'm home, my wife is my right hand. While I'm away, my right hand is my wife." and "Fighting for someone else's freedom is like fucking for someone else's virginity.") and talking about the whores and drugs that were around at the time. Rabbit also sounded very high when he was doing his show. His motto during the show was "... And the hits just keep on comin'".
Opie had a tape of this guy among his personal belongings and brought the audio in on February 20, 2008, where he and Anthony commented on how funny and edgy his show was, and how he was doing "shock jock"-type radio before Howard Stern, even though Howard claims he invented this type of show. Rabbit's voice was compared to Rod Serling's and to Christian Bale's character "Patrick Bateman" from American Psycho. After playing the audio, Rabbit's name became one of the top 15 search terms on the Google Trends website, without Opie and Anthony having to do a Google Bomb to promote it; eventually his name became one of the top 2 searches at its peak.
On February 21, O&A got Dave Rabbit on the air. He explained how his friend's death in Vietnam inspired him to bring rock and roll to the troops. After returning from Vietnam, he took over his family's business and didn't get to do any more radio until recently. He told O&A he wished to retain his anonymity, for privacy purposes. O&A were eager to give this guy some airtime; fans were suggesting he get a show on the Saturday Night Virus.
On February 22 at 10:15 AM, Opie's tape was played straight through to about noon (basically, so they could leave early).
