Famous vigilante who shot five black men who accosted him for money on a New York subway train in the 1980's near the 14th St. station. He was later brought up on gun charges, and became a hero of New Yorkers who were tired of the high crime rate in the pre-Giuliani years in New York. Goetz was given a "slap on the wrist" punishment comparative to the crime he was charged with.

Since his trial ended, Goetz has rarely made media appearances except during his fruitless attempts to run for mayor or New York on a platform of animal rights and vegetarianism.

Goetz made several appearances on the Opie and Anthony Show on XM, once telling in great detail how he shot the would-be muggers on the subway train. The story was chilling, and was one of the first memorable segments on the XM show. Goetz was originally brought to the show by producer Ben Sparks, who got in contact with Bernie on the Internet and began an online friendship with him.

Often ridiculed by Opie, he finally snapped when Opie smashed his music CD, and Goetz went for him. He hasn't appeared on the show since.
