April Fool's Day Prank
From OAPedia.com
The April Fool's Day Prank is the most widely known prank committed by Opie and Anthony, which occurred in 1998 when the duo were on WAAF. The bit began when Opie called Anthony before the show and suggested they tell everybody that Boston's Mayor Menino was dead. Anthony OK'ed the idea, and on April Fool's Day they announced that Menino had died in a car crash in Florida. Though most listeners were smart enough to realize that this was simply an April Fool's joke, some believed it. The boys took calls from distraught listeners and added more and more asinine details to the alleged accident. The story got out of control when a member of Menino's family claimed to have heard the news about the death on WAAF. The local media was whipped into a frenzy and ran with the story of the April Fool's prank gone wrong. This prompted the famous quote from Anthony, "You don't go to CNN for dick jokes. Don't come to us for hard-hitting news!".
The stunt led to Opie and Anthony being fired from WAAF, and the duo soon moved back to New York to do radio for WNEW. Years later, it was revealed that the stunt was done deliberately to get fired, as O&A were being courted to come to New York and needed a reason to get out of Boston. Opie also revealed that the prank wasn't done just to do an April Fool's joke - it was done to make fun of them.
Because of the incident, O&A didn't do a live show on April Fool's Day until 2008 (the tenth anniversary). Whenever the day came up and they were scheduled to do a show, they usually ran Worst ofs instead.
Mayor Menino apparently still holds a grudge over the incident.
